ABOUT KLIS FORTRESS
Fortress was built on an inaccessible steep cliff at the passage between mountain massifs Kozjak and Mosor.
Fortress has had a prominent defensive position in the past since it has supervised and defended the most important trade and communication path from the hinterland to central Dalmatian coast.
Given its strategic importance and its role in Croatian history, it was one of the most important forts in the country.
In vain did Croats ask Christian European rulers to resist Ottoman invasion together. The most turbulent period of Klis history began in the beginning of the 16th century, at the time of the greatest Ottoman invasion into Europe and Croatian lands.
At that time, Petar Kružić, Captain and Knez of Klis, played a prominent role in defence of Klis, Croatia and Europe. For more than two decades, along with his Uskoks, he resisted many Ottoman attacks and sieges, while also eliminating Venetian attempts of seizing Klis.
POLJIČKA REPUBLIC
From the 13th century onwards, the territory of today’s Poljica was organized as the so-called Republic of Poljica (the name first used in 1774 by Alberto Fortis, a famous Italian travel writer and explorer, in his book Viaggio in Dalmazia), which has remained a unique phenomenon in Europe due to its – for the time – unusually democratic system of government
The basic legal act governing the functioning of the Republic of Poljica was the famous Poljica Statute, a collection of customary law originally written in the early days of the principality, with the oldest preserved edition dating back to the 15th century . This invaluable piece of both Croatian and European legal history regulated in detail all aspects of economic and social life in the Republic of Poljica.
“SOPARNIK” TRADITIONAL FOOD
“Soparnik is Croatian pizza”
Traditionally, the soparnik is taken from the middle towards the edges. The guest of honor gets the first rhombus from the middle. It is served with a bucara of wine , which is placed in the middle of the steamer after cutting and taking 4 pieces.
There is also the question of whether soparnik is a more modest version of the Bosnian vegetable pie. There is a basis for this theory because Poljica bordered the Ottoman Empire, and from 1540 to 1699 they were part of the Ottoman state.
It is an indigenous Croatian product in the European register . It is on the UNESCO list of protected intangible heritage.
DESCRIPTION OF EXCURSION
In the morning, we will visit the Klis fortress in the immediate vicinity of the city of Split, whose special feature is not only that the Game of Thrones series was filmed there, but that the fortress has a great historical role in preserving Croatian and European cultural, religious and economic traditions.
Accompanied by an expert guide, you will learn the history of the Croatian nation while walking through the corridors of this beautiful fortress.
Our next stop after the Klis fortress is small village Gata center of the Republic of Poljica, a small state with its own form of democratic governance.
Poljica was, in fact, governed by the people, who elected their leader – the great Prince of Poljica – through a public voting process held each year on St. George’s Day in Gata, at the foot of the Gradac hill.
The presentation about the Republic of Poljica will be held in the historical museum of the Republic of Poljica in the beautiful surroundings of the old church of St. Cyprian.
In addition to the history, the museum employee will also tell you the most famous legend in this area – the legend of the heroine Mili Gojsalić
And at the end of this excursion, tasting the so-called Croatian pizza – Soparnik. This dish represents in its core everything that and who the Dalmatians are – the inhabitants of this region.
Soparnik is a traditional dish of this region, the preparation of which is so unique and healthy that it represents an intangible cultural heritage.
Soparnik is baked on an open fire in such a way that the place for baking is heated and Soparnik is sprinkled with ashes.
The basic ingredients for Soparnk are: thin dough, onion and garlic, olive oil and Swiss chard.
Of course, not a single dish in Dalmatia can be eaten without drinking local wine.
