About Klis Fortress
Klis Fortress, perched on a steep cliff between Kozjak and Mosor mountains, served as a key defensive stronghold, protecting vital trade routes from the hinterland to central Dalmatia.
Its strategic importance made it one of Croatia’s most significant forts.
During the 16th-century Ottoman invasions, Captain Petar Kružić and his Uskoks heroically defended Klis for over two decades, resisting both Ottoman and Venetian forces.

Poljička Republic
From the 13th century, Poljica operated as a unique democratic republic, governed by the Poljica Statute, a 15th-century legal document regulating its social and economic life.
This system, centered in Gata, elected a leader annually on St. George’s Day, making it a rare example of early democracy in Europe.
